The app will send the photo wirelessly to NameTag’s server, where it will compare the photo to millions of online records and return with a name, more photos, and social-media profiles, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where the person (or their friends) might have publicly posted photos of themselves.

Netflix is now free to create a U.S. Facebook app that shares users’ viewing history if they opt in, after the company successfully lobbied Congress to amend a 1988 law.

A Netflix spokesman said the company “will launch social features in the U.S.” sometime in 2013. The law in question, called the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), previously prohibited “a video tape service provider” from revealing customer information without the customer’s written consent.

According to chilling court documents, Richard Leon Finkbiner, 39, befriended the boys online and enticed them into uploading the explicit material. He then threatened to show it to friends or family if they wouldn’t upload more. Worse, evidence on Finkbiner’s computer suggests “several hundred” other victims of roughly the same age.
