A former Midland City police officer has been sentenced in a child sex abuse case.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports 39-year-old Christopher Allen Ford was convicted of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12 and was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison.

An Opp man is back in jail on a bond of more than $2 million after being indicted by a grand jury on charges ranging from rape and sodomy to sexual abuse of a child.

Jerry Wayne Scofield, 59, of Opp, was taken into custody by Covington County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Paige Spivey Monday. Scofield was originally jailed in December, after an unrelated case revealed he allegedly sexually abused a female relative for years. Scofield’s December arrest came after a months-long investigation, CCSO officials said at the time.

Carl Philip Herold could be looking for a new lawyer in his multi-count child sex abuse case after his attorney filed notice seeking to leave the case.

Madison County Circuit Judge Chris Comer has set a hearing for Thursday on the issue.

Herold’s Birmingham-based attorney Steven Eversole was hired after Herold’s November arrest.

Eversole filed notice seeking to withdraw as Herold’s attorney and noted that his appearance was only for district court — the case is now in circuit court. The filing argues he has fulfilled his contractual obligations to Herold.

Oliver Brazelle, 79, the former music director at the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield, was arrested Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, and charged with second-degree sexual abuse and one-count of second-degree sodomy, according to officials in Lauderdale County.

Brazelle had been barred in 2003 from directing youth choirs by the Methodist bishop for North Alabama, according to records released during the investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, because of allegations of inappropriate relationships with young people alleged to have occurred in the 1970s. When the Sheffield police opened an investigation in July 2012, Brazelle admitted to church officials that he had had an inappropriate relationship with a youth in the past. Church officials fired Brazelle on July 27, 2012.

Jeff Eddie, who was charged with two counts of child pornography, 31 counts of second-degree sodomy, and three counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12, lists the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Facility as a former employer on his webpage.

Under way since 2012, the operation has resulted in the arrest of 29 people, 11 of them from the group in the Philippines that facilitated the abuse, Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) said in a statement Wednesday.

Some of the people who arranged for the abuse, which was filmed on webcams, were from the children’s own families, it said.

The burglar put three tapes in a brown envelope, hid them under a parked car, and then called police from a public phone, directing them to go find it.

A man who fled the country in 1998 before his child sex abuse trial was to begin was found guilty Friday afternoon of five sex abuse-related charges.

It took a Baldwin County jury about an hour to convict Giusseppe LoPorto, 80, of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree sodomy and one count of first-degree rape.

LoPorto’s sentencing is set for January. He faces a one to 10-year sentence on each of the sexual abuse charges, 10 years to life on the sodomy charges and 10 years to life on the rape charge.

The county’s cold case task force earned its first conviction Friday, and in doing so, cleared two child sex abuse cases.

District Attorney Walt Merrell said the conviction of 62-year-old David Ozie Griggs of Andalusia came after the office discovered Griggs’ tie with a case from 2009.

“This case came to our attention when Chief Assistant District Attorney Grace Jeter discovered an unsolved sexual abuse case that Griggs was connected to while she was preparing a case for trial in another matter involving Griggs,” Merrell said.
