Suddenly, Baltimore County Police were calling in the FBI to assist in their search for a missing person.

A federal jury in Nebraska on Tuesday convicted Timothy DeFoggi, the former acting director of cyber security at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), on child pornography charges.

DeFoggi, one of several persons nabbed in an ongoing FBI investigation of three child porn websites, is the sixth person convicted, according to a Justice Department announcement. He was convicted on seven counts, including engaging in a child exploitation enterprise as well as in conspiracy to advertise and distribute child porn and accessing a computer with intent to view child porn.

A 17-year-old Alabama girl forced into prostitution was rescued and three pimps arrested during a week-long, nationwide sex-trafficking operation, the FBI announced Monday.

Also in North Alabama, which stretches from Birmingham to Huntsville, lawmen rescued a six-week old baby and identified 14 adult women, some of who had been forced into prostitution since they were juveniles.

“Sex trafficking of children is one of the most violent and unconscionable crimes committed in this country,” said Richard D. Schwein Jr., special agent in charge of the FBI’s Birmingham division. “There are few law enforcement missions more important than protecting our nation’s children.”

Operation Cross County VIII was carried out in 106 cities across 54 FBI field divisions. Lawmen recovered 168 children who were being victimized through prostitution, and arrested 281 pimps on state and federal charges.

While investigating a hosting company known for sheltering child porn last year the FBI incidentally seized the entire e-mail database of a popular anonymous webmail service called TorMail.

Now the FBI is tapping that vast trove of e-mail in unrelated investigations.

The bureau’s data windfall, seized from a company called Freedom Hosting, surfaced in court papers last week when prosecutors indicted a Florida man for allegedly selling counterfeit credit cards online. The filings show the FBI built its case in part by executing a search warrant on a Gmail account used by the counterfeiters, where they found that orders for forged cards were being sent to a TorMail e-mail account: “platplus@tormail.net.”

Multiple agencies, including the Dothan Police Department, Houston County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI, are looking for a suspect accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting two girls and attempting to kidnap a third at Dothan area mobile home parks. The three cases have happened over the last two and a half months.

Authorities started their investigation on Sept. 6 when a young girl sleeping in her bed was abducted from her home in the Garden Estates Trailer Park on Hodgesville Road. The male suspect took the child to an unknown location, sexually assaulted her and then returned her to her home.

Video of the man engaging in sexually explicit activities was found online in April 2013 by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Investigators have isolated images from the video in the hopes of tracking this person down.

The FBI announced Monday that 105 children involved in sex trafficking were recovered in 76 U.S. cities.

In Birmingham, three juveniles ranging in age from 13 to 17 were rescued. The 13-year-old is the youngest juvenile involved, according to an FBI spokesman.
