There have been signs that Americans are leaning more and more on the smartphone as a primary internet device, and nowhere is that clearer than the latest edition of Pew’s Cell Internet Use survey. The research group found that 21 percent of American cellphone owners now get online chiefly through their handset, up from 17 percent last year.

A Washington man is facing federal child pornography charges after allegedly recording and posting online the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl at an elementary school where he was once the PTA president.

Federal prosecutors say David M. Navarro, 37, shot a cellphone video of the girl performing oral sex at Belfair Elementary School — and shared it on the web.

The implications of the petition are huge, given that today’s smart phones are giant repositories of private information and can serve as tracking devices, as well.

On Thursday, three northern Virginia teen boys will head to trial to face child pornography charges stemming from sexting-style videos made on their cellphones. If found guilty, each faces up to 20 years in prison and the sex offender label.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s attorney Ray Morrogh told the Washington Post that there needs to be a balance in these situations between labeling teens with sex charges and considering the impact on victims of the distributed image.
