A human trafficking suspect was arrested and two victims were recovered in Montgomery Monday night, according to the Montgomery Police Department.

Theon Dontray Smith, 27, of South Carolina, was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree human trafficking.

It is the first human trafficking case that the Montgomery Police Department has investigated since the state law was passed in 2010.

MPD Chief of Staff, Bryan Jurkofsky says the department received a call from out-of-state parents, which is what triggered the investigation.

“They received contact from their daughter, who said she was in Montgomery and asked for a welfare check,” Jurkofsky said. “Patrol units responded and identified two minor females and one adult male.”

Sgt. Brent Blankley said officers found the posts in October on a site that’s functionally similar to the personal ad site craigslist, but includes more offers of illicit services.

The investigation led police to A1 Therapy and Spa on Highway 69 South, a massage parlor, where officers have arrested three women since October, including one arrest made last week.

A 41-year-old Houston man was arrested on suspicion of child pornography charges in an investigation founded on a tip that Google sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

“They got a tip, basically Gmail,” detective David Nettles of the Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force told a local news broadcast last week.

The defendant, John Skillern, was being held on $200,000 bond and is a registered sex offender connected to a 20-year-old sexual assault on a young boy.

Google publicly promised last year to help crack down on online child pornography. Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman, said in November 2013 that Google “put more than 200 people to work developing new, state-of-the-art technology to tackle the problem.”

A longtime associate pastor at Believers Church in Auburn has been arrested on child sex abuse charges.

His arrest in May got him kicked out of the church where he had been for 30 years.  Lee County Sheriff’s detectives say the two adult victims came forward in April to report they were abused in the early 1990’s.

Every Sunday, for nearly 30 years at Believers Church on Moore’s Mill Road, 53-year-old John Sluder, an associate pastor, would play guitar during services.

“People have shed tears because of what he appeared to be, a gentle old man.  So yes, we were very shocked,” said attorney Ben Hand.
